August Update: Free CatKits for Qualified Cats this Month!

Happy International Cat Day, all your citizen scientists and feline fellows! International Cat Day, one of our FAVORITE holidays, was created to celebrate our beloved felines across the globe. This holiday helps spread public awareness of the many needs of cats worldwide. Today, while we are celebrating all that is wonderful about our pawsome kitties, we are asking you to join our fight to improve global cat health. Here is your August update on free cat DNA tests!

How is Basepaws improving global cat health?

As some of you know, we recently RECEIVED FUNDING to study the DNA of cats with unique traits and inherited diseases. When we asked the cat community to help us locate these cats, we received an outpouring of emails from people eager to send us cat fur for our research. Just this last week we shipped out more than 150 CatKits to our volunteer citizen scientist, and we still have more to go! Thank you to all who have helped!

August update: What are we doing now?

We are busy shipping kits and are updating our lists DAILY. As soon as we get the fluff back from our collaborators our science team will prioritize their samples and the meowgic begins. We are still looking to more samples and more CatKits to give away for FREE!

How can I participate?

We have had lots of samples submitted, but we are still seeking purebred cats, as well as cats with the following disorders:

  • Acromegaly
  • Asthma
  • Diabetes
  • Glaucoma 3, primary congenital
  • Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
  • Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)
  • Porto-Systemic Liver Shunt PSS

If your cat falls into one of these categories, please contact us at for a free Basepaws CatKit. Please attach appropriate documentation confirming the diagnosis (report from your veterinarian or a copy of a genetic test report) or a photo of your cat's breed registration.

If your cat doesn't suffer from any of these conditions, you can still help us by spreading the word and sharing this article. Together we can make this world a better place for cats, and their humans.
