Mammalian A3 proteins and viral infectivity factor (Vif) proteins are in a constant arms race. A3 proteins can inhibit viral replication. On the other hand, Vif proteins of lentiviruses can degrade A3 proteins and thus antagonize their antiviral activity. Investigation of the seven naturally occurring variants of the feline A3 gene APOBEC3Z3 has revealed that one of these variants is likely to confer resistance to infection with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). This variant appears to be resistant to FIV Vif-mediated degradation.
The APOBEC3Z3 gene variant can be confirmed with a genetic test.
