Genetic Predispositions and Health

Swedish Elkhounds are known to be generally healthy dogs, but as a larger breed they are at risk for developing orthopedic problems, such as hip and elbow dysplasia. Genetic testing is recommended, including for the following specific conditions: hyperuricosoria, degenerative myelopathy, and progressive rod-cone degeneration.

Personality and Behavior

The Jämthund is known for its intelligence, loyalty, and versatility. They have a strong prey drive and were bred to work independently when hunting, making them determined and focused dogs. Despite their hunting background, they tend to be gentle and affectionate with their families. However, early socialization and training are essential to ensure they get along well with other pets and strangers.

Their intelligence and quick learning abilities make them trainable, but they do require consistent and firm handling due to their independent nature. Additionally, they need plenty of physical and mental stimulation to prevent boredom, as a bored Jämthund may become destructive.
