Autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome (ALPS) is an autosomal recessive disease that causes substantial enlargement of the lymph nodes and spleen due to accumulation of lymphocytes. This phenomenon is caused by the disrupted normal apoptosis (cell death) of lymphocytes. The condition is lethal.

The most common clinical sign of ALPS is the enlargement of the lymph nodes and the spleen. Some kittens will also show regenerative hemolytic anemia, abdominal distension, lethargy, and weight loss. Kittens will typically die or require euthanasia around 2-4 months of age, depending on the disease progression.
Diagnosis of this disease requires lymph node cytology and immunohistochemistry. A genetic test is sometimes used to confirm disease or carrier status.
