Pyruvate kinase deficiency of erythrocytes is an inherited metabolic disorder characterized by disrupted survival or red blood cells (erythrocytes). Cats suffering from the disease develop anemia. The anemia is intermittent, with variable age of onset.
PKLR
Autosomal recessive
This disease often manifests as lethargy, diarrhea, decreased appetite, pale mucous membranes, weight loss, icterus, poor coat quality, and splenomegaly. If left untreated, most cats will require euthanasia by 5 years of age.
Diagnosis of this condition is done via analysis of a blood sample. Genetic testing is also used for a definitive diagnosis of affected cats.
