Hanoverian Scenthound

The Hanoverian Scenthound, also known as the Hanoverian Scent Hound or Hannoverscher Schweisshund, is a breed of scent hound that originated in Germany. The breed was developed in the early 19th century in the region of Hanover, by crossing local hunting dogs with Bloodhounds and other scent hound breeds. One of the local hounds was said to be the Liam Hound from the early Middle Ages. Hanoverians were specifically bred for their excellent sense of smell and tracking abilities, making them exceptional at trailing wounded game during hunting.

Genetic Predispositions and Health

The Hanoverian Scenthound may be predisposed to ear infections, hip dysplasia, and cancer. Genetic testing is recommended, including for the following additional conditions: hyperuricosoria, degenerative myelopathy, and progressive rod-cone degeneration. As a deep-chested breed, they are susceptible to bloat, also known as gastric dilation volvulus (GDV). This is a life-threatening condition that can come on suddenly, so it’s important to know the warning signs and get an affected dog immediate veterinary care.

Personality and Behavior

The Hanoverian Scenthound is known for its calm and friendly nature. They are devoted to their families and get along well with children and other pets, making them an excellent choice for a family companion. However, it's important to note that their strong hunting instincts may lead them to chase small animals, so early socialization and training are essential.

Fun Facts

This is a "Peter Pan" slow maturing breed, as puppies retain their puppy qualities for several years.

The Hanoverian Scenthound's extraordinary sense of smell and tracking ability have made them indispensable in search and rescue operations, where they excel at finding missing people and locating disaster victims.

This breed is considered rare outside of Germany, and finding Hanoverian Scenthound puppies can be a challenging task in many parts of the world.

The Hanoverian Scenthound's appearance is similar to that of Bloodhounds, but they are a separate and distinct breed with their own unique traits and characteristics
