Melanocortin 1 Receptor (MC1R), also known as the Extension locus, is a gene that is responsible for producing eumelanin (black) and phaeomelanin (red or yellow) pigments. There are six known variants of this gene. Loss of function variants in the MC1R genes cause a cream-colored coat in Australian Cattle Dogs, or a white coat in some Siberian and Alaskan Huskies.
