Melanocortin 1 Receptor (MC1R), also known as the Extension locus, is a gene that is responsible for producing eumelanin (black) and phaeomelanin (red or yellow) pigments. There are six known variants of this gene. Both e¹ and e² are recessive, and are responsible for a red/yellow coat. This genotype has inhibited black pigment production leading to cream, yellow, and/or red coats. The e² variant is expected to be found only in Australian Cattle Dogs and results in pale, cream-colored coats.
