Melanocortin 1 Receptor (MC1R), also known as the Extension locus, is a gene that is responsible for producing eumelanin (black) and phaeomelanin (red or yellow) pigments. There are six known variants of this gene. This genotype has inhibited black pigment production, which leads to cream, yellow, and/or red coats. The e³ variant is responsible for a pale yellow to white coat, and is only expected in Siberian and Alaskan Huskies. This gene is recessive.
