Hypothyroidism is an endocrine disease wherein the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone, resulting in an imbalance affecting a wide variety of body functions. Most frequently, hypothyroidism in cats has iatrogenic causes - it can occur after iodine-131 therapy, antithyroid drug therapy or thyroidectomy. The congenital form of hypothyroidism in cats is very rare.

Cats with hypothyroidism can be lethargic and gain weight. In some cases, they will have a poor hair coat quality, increased appetite, and increased water intake.
A diagnosis of hypothyroidism is made based on clinical signs, history, and the results of a T4 or TSH blood test.
Current data does not indicate that specific breeds are at a higher risk.
