Folded ears are associated with osteochondrodysplasia, a genetic condition affecting cartilage tissues throughout the body. The phenotype is linked to an autosomal dominant allele of a gene named TRPV4. This mutation is specific to the Scottish Fold breed. Affected cats have ears folded forward and down, as well as different degrees of malformation in the distal forelimbs, distal hindlimbs and tail, and progressive joint destruction.
