Dwarfism due to Growth Hormone (GH) deficiency is a condition that leads to growth abnormalities. Growth hormones stimulate growth, cell reproduction, and cell regeneration.
GH1
Autosomal recessive
Clinical signs of development abnormalities present at around 6 months of age. These include disproportionate dwarfism, retained deciduous (baby) teeth, and retained puppy coat. Puppies can present with hypoglycemia.
A veterinarian will conduct a thorough exam, including a review of health history and any clinical signs. Definitive diagnosis of this condition will require a Growth Hormone test. Genetic testing is necessary to determine if there is an underlying genetic cause, which can assist veterinarians with diagnosis and help breeders identify affected and carrier dogs.
