Ventricular Arrhythmias and Sudden Cardiac Death in Rhodesian Ridgeback Dogs have been linked to a mutation in the QIL1 gene. This gene is important for the production of cellular energy in the body, which impacts high energy organs, such as the heart.

Likely autosomal recessive
This is a spontaneous condition, with no clinical signs before sudden death. Dogs affected by this disease have a window of vulnerability between 3-18 months of age. After 24 months of age, these dogs are no longer at risk.
A veterinarian will conduct a thorough exam, including a review of health history and any clinical signs. Due to this disease resulting in a sudden change in heart rhythm a 24-hour ambulatory ECG monitor (Holter) may be required to find the abnormality. Genetic testing can determine if there is a mutation present.
