Dogs generally have five digits on the front paws and four digits on the hind paws. This is presumably due to an evolutionary adaptation that led to the loss of a digit on the hind paws. Preaxial polydactyly (PPD) in the hind limb is a developmental trait that causes the restoration of the fifth digit on the hind paw. This digit is often referred to as a dewclaw, and is known to be caused by a mutation in the LMBR1 gene.
