Pancreatitis is a term that refers to inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas is an important organ in the process of food digestion and regulation of byproducts through the release of hormones. This is a fairly common condition that can have a variety of causes, including genetic causes.

Autosomal recessive
Dogs suffering from pancreatitis may present with vomiting, nausea, fever, lethargy, diarrhea, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain (the latter may be indicated by a hunched back).
A veterinarian will conduct a thorough exam, including a review of health history and any clinical signs. Laboratory testing can check the function of the pancreas. Imaging may be used. Genetic testing is necessary to determine if there is an underlying genetic cause, which can assist veterinarians with diagnosis and help breeders identify affected and carrier dogs.
