Nasal Parakeratosis is a genetic disease that affects specialized cells of the nose, which results in crusting and cracking over the nasal area. Affected dogs are otherwise healthy.

Autosomal recessive
Signs typically appear around 6-12 months of age. These signs include dry, rough crusts on the surface and edge of the nose that are brown or gray in color. Fluid may accumulate in the cracks. Depending on severity, the cracks may be painful and/or lead to bacterial infections.
A veterinarian will review health history, conduct a thorough exam, and note any clinical signs. A skin biopsy may be needed to support a diagnosis. Genetic testing assists veterinarians with diagnosis and helps breeders identify affected and carrier dogs.
