Improper coat is a term used when a coat that is not typical of the breed is present. Genetic mutations in the RPSO2 and/or FGF5 genes have been shown to change the length of the hair, as well as where the hair grows. This can occur in Portuguese Water Dogs that display shorter coats found on the head, face, and lower legs.
